The FDA has logged 9,116 reports of adverse reactions to McNeil Phamaceutical's Ortho Evra Patch in a 17 month period.
Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical is part of the massive Johnson & Johnson group of corporations, headquartered in Raritan , New Jersey. The company was formed by the 1993 merger of Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation and McNeil Pharmaceutical.
One of the pharmaceuticals they manufacture is the Ortho Evra Patch. In 2004, the drug accounted for more than 9.9 million prescriptions with sales topping $411 million.
Johnson & Johnson's gross profits for 2005 will be very close to $40 billion on sales of nearly $50 billion.
The Patch is currently the subject of renewed concern due to numerous lawsuits which maintain that the Patch is responsible for adverse health affects such as the development of blood clots, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke and even death. In just the last two years there have been reports of at least 17 deaths linked to the use of the Ortho Evra Patch.
It is alleged that Ortho-McNeil was aware of the increased medical risks associated with Ortho Evra before the drug was approved and that, once approved, the company failed to adequately warn patients about these risks. The incidence of blood clots in Phase III trials of Ortho Evra was reportedly six times greater than the incidence of such events in women taking oral contraceptives.
